The Blood Group Diet Review. By Dietitian, Juliette Kellow BSc RDFollow a diet that’s designed specifically for your blood group and you’ll lose weight, feel healthier and lower your risk of many diseases. At least, that’s what Dr Peter D’Adamo, naturopath and creator of the Blood Type Diet claims in his book Eat Right For Your Blood Type. No wonder then, that it’s been a hit with Hollywood stars like Liz Hurley and Courtney Cox- Arquette, as well as closer- to- home celebrities, like Cheryl Cole, Martine Mc. Cutcheon & Sir Cliff Richard. Cheryl says that it has made such a difference, not so much to her shape, but to how she feels and to her energy levels. Having tried the diet, she now believes that it works, and now watches what she eats, not to stay slim but to feel good. But while Cheryl might be a fan of the Blood Type Diet, most medical and nutrition experts aren’t, and agree that the theory is complete nonsense. So what is the theory? Prepare to be blinded by science! Dr D’Adamo believes our blood group determines how our bodies deal with different nutrients. His theory is based on the idea that each blood group has its own unique antigen marker (a substance that the body recognises as being alien) and this marker reacts badly with certain foods, leading to all sorts of potential health problems. Furthermore, Dr D’Adamo believes that levels of stomach acidity and digestive enzymes are linked with your blood type. Consequently, he says, by following a diet designed specifically for your blood type, your body digests and absorbs food more efficiently, with the result that you lose weight. But here’s where the theory becomes even more weird and wonderful. Dr D’Adamo believes that because blood types evolved at different times throughout history, we should eat a diet based on the types of foods our ancestors typically ate at the time when our blood type was first recognised! When did the blood types evolve? Blood Group O was the first blood type to be identified, although how we know this is anyone’s guess – we’re talking about our hunter- gatherer ancestors who were around in 5. B. C! Nevertheless, Dr D’Adamo believes because our type O ancestors survived and thrived on a high- protein, meat- based diet, that’s the type of diet blood group Os should follow in the 2. Next came the emergence of blood type A, sometime around 1. B. C! By this time, our ancestors’ hunter- gathering days were over and instead they started to settle into farming- type communities. The creation of blood type A around this time meant our ancestors did well on a vegetarian- based diet. And again, Dr D’Adamo recommends that blood group A’s should today follow a veggie diet. Blood type B supposedly evolved around 1. B. C thanks to our nomadic ancestors. They left their farms and started wandering the land, constantly moving from place to place. The blood group diet says you should eat right for your blood type. Here's dietitian Juliette Kellow's review of the Blood Type Diet. Consequently, Dr D'Adamo's theory goes, blood group B’s today can get away with eating a varied diet that consists of most foods including meat, dairy, grains and vegetables. Finally, came blood type AB, which evolved just 1,0. Dr D'Adamo thinks this blood type helped our ancestors make the transition to modern times. Meaning that people with blood group AB can eat a mixture of the foods suitable for both blood group A and blood group B. That gives me a good idea, but can you be more specific about what you can and can’t eat? Each of the four blood types has a detailed list of foods that should be avoided and those that can be included. Dr D’Adamo says that our digestive tract retains the memory of ancient times, and so type Os need to eat a typical hunter- gatherer type diet. In other words, type Os should follow a high- protein, low- carb diet with lots of meat and fish but no dairy products, wheat or grains. If that sounds familiar, it’s because it is – the diet recommended for people with blood type O is simply a variation on many of the typical high- protein, low- carb diets that are currently popular, such as the Atkins diet. Foods you can eat freely include meat, fish and olive oil; foods you can eat in moderation include eggs, nuts, seeds, certain vegetables and fruits; and foods to avoid include dairy products, beans, cereals, bread, pasta and rice. To complement your food intake, Dr D’Adamo recommends lots of vigorous aerobic exercise such as aerobics and running – just like our hunter- gatherer ancestors did! Blood Group AThis is the second most common blood type in the UK. Again according to Dr D'Adamo, digestive system is apparently very good at remembering that our ancestors had settled, farming lifestyles, which included eating lots of grains and vegetables but little meat. Consequently, blood type A’s should follow a vegetarian diet but still avoid dairy products. This means nuts, seeds, beans, cereals, pasta, rice, fruit and veg are all on the . Meanwhile, calming exercises are thought to be best for blood type A’s such as yoga or golf. Blood Group BOnly one person in 1. ![]() Current News and Background about Healthy Eating. As our type B ancestors were able to thrive on all sorts of foods, thanks to all that travelling, very few foods need to be avoided and this is the closest you’ll get to a healthy, balanced diet from Dr D'Adamo. The "blood type diet" theory has gained widespread attention from the public since the release of "Eat Right For Your Type" by Peter J.![]() ![]() The only foods that need to be avoided are processed foods, although nuts and seeds aren’t recommended and only small amounts of carb- rich foods should be eaten. When it comes to exercise, Dr D’Adamo recommends activities that have mental component, such as hiking, tennis and swimming – clearly our ancestors did a lot of thinking while they were walking! Blood Group ABPeople with this rare blood type should eat a combination of the foods recommended for blood groups A and B. Somewhat confusing when type B allows you to eat most foods, while type A suggests a vegetarian diet! Dr D’Adamo gets around this by suggesting that type ABs follow a veggie diet most of the time with some meat, fish and dairy products occasionally. It’s the same when it comes to exercise too – blood type ABs should combine calming exercises with moderately intense activities. What do the experts say? Medical experts universally agree that the theory is nonsense, and say there is absolutely no link between our blood group and the diet we eat. Consequently you won’t find qualified nutritionists or dietitians recommending this diet. There are also several concerns, namely that the diets recommended for blood groups O and A are considerably limited and cut out major groups of foods. In the long term, this can result in a poor intake of nutrients needed for good health. Cutting out dairy products, for example, will lead to poor intakes of calcium, which can put you at risk of osteoporosis (brittle bone disease), while avoiding meat can result in low intakes of iron, which can lead to anaemia. This is even more worrying in view of the fact that most people in the UK are blood group O or A. But will the diet help me lose weight? Almost certainly, but this is because each of the diets for the four blood types eliminates specific groups of food such as bread and cereals, dairy products or meat and fish. Dr D’Adamo doesn’t give any indication about how much weight you’ll lose, it will depend on how much you restrict your food intake. Are there any pros? There are not many positive things to say about this diet, which is clearly based on science fiction rather than science fact. However, as with any diet, it will get you thinking about what you are currently eating, with the result that you may start to make changes to your diet. Added to this, the blood type diet recommends eating fresh, natural foods and so can help you de- junk your diet by cutting out processed foods, takeaways, booze, chocolate and too many cups of coffee – all of which our ancestors missed out on! And the cons? There are plenty. On a practical level, you may need a blood test to discover your blood group if you don’t already know it – and this will mean a trip to your local health centre! Mealtimes may also be impossible if everyone in the family wants to follow the diet, but has a different blood group! But most importantly, it’s just another cranky way of getting people to cut calories – and the most worrying thing about this is that while you’ll probably lose weight, it could also affect your health in the long term. Nevertheless, if you’re still adamant about giving it a go, it’s best to follow it for just a short time (one week or less) and use it to kick- start a longer- term, healthy, weight- loss plan. Juliette’s verdict. I’m really not a fan of this diet. It’s filled with pseudo- science and has the potential to scare people into avoiding many nutritious foods in an effort to lose weight. It’s also worth bearing in mind that although the diet gives the impression that it’s based on sound scientific research this is, in fact, far from the case. Ultimately, the theory is nonsense. Nevertheless, based on Dr D’Adamo’s theory, I’m looking forward to the evolution of blood type F! People with blood type F will need lots of fast food, takeaways, pizza, sugary snacks, crisps and chocolate to remain in tune with their environment. After all, if the theory is correct, surely that’s what we can expect, based on what many of us now eat in the 2. WDBJ Virginia Shooting: Hoax Theories Debunked. Within minutes of news breaking that a young reporter and her cameraman were shot dead in Virginia, social media users were decrying the apparent tragedy a hoax – They’re Wrong. I don’t say that out of hand. I watched Alison Parker, Adam Ward and interviewee Vicki Gardner stand within feet of the killer like everyone else, baffled that they never even saw him brandishing a gun. However my immediate response to this anomaly wasn’t to call it a “Freemason- Illuminati Media Hoax” and begin mocking the apparent victims. It was to sit back, analyse the footage and wonder whether there are any reasonable explanations for the way the shooting went down. There are, and I’m going to share them. Reader discretion is advised! Why Did They Not See The Shooter? There’s several layers to this question, starting with the possibility that Parker and Gardner did see the shooter (named as Vester Flanagan). Truthers who only deal with black and white will say that this means they were all acting. What they fail to consider is that despite seeing him at some point, it doesn’t mean they saw his gun or understood his intentions. We can exclude Adam Ward from this question because he was busy panning his camera across the scenery below (a standard establishing shot) before settling on the two women talking. Let’s get one thing straight, this was a live TV broadcast. Parker as a professional will have experienced the presence of bystanders during filming many times, her job is essentially to ignore them, especially if they are close enough to cause a distraction. There are no second takes in live TV. Her sole focus is her interview subject, not a man she would have no fathomable way of knowing was about to shoot her. If she recognized the man as Flanagan, that’s even more reason to keep composure and ensure he doesn’t ruin the broadcast. Ask yourself an honest question. How many times have you walked down a street, sat on a train, or been in a waiting room and completely ignored the person right next to you? Sure, you know they’re there, but you may only glance at them a couple of times, regardless of how loud they’re sneezing or how frantically they’re rummaging through their bag. Humans are pretty good at zoning out their surroundings, especially when they’re focussed on a specific task. Ever played a video game and completely ignored somebody standing next to the TV? To illustrate this directly, how many times have you seen a public news broadcast where people are darting all over the place, or even deliberately trying to be a nuisance, but the reporter remains focussed on their job? Every time, because that’s what they do. For a split second Parker spots shooter Flanagan. What’s tragic after analysing the footage from the shooter’s perspective is that there is a split second that Parker notices him, but this is before he pulls out the gun, and she immediately goes back to Gardner. By time the gun is out Gardner is being asked a question and is focussed on Parker. Her head is also turned away from Flanagan. We have the video and we know for a fact that neither of them looked at any point after the gun was drawn. Like a horror film we can all scream “he’s behind you” but sadly that doesn’t change reality. Parker was obviously aware of Flanagan’s presence as noted, but not that he was armed with anything other than the cell phone camera he initially approached them with. Parker immediately begins asking Gardner a rather lengthy question after her brief glance at Flanagan. If she was distracted even a little bit her words would have slowed down and she would have been umming and ahhing. Experiment at home, try and recite a question to somebody while taking on board other stimuli. It’s extremely difficult. She did not see the gun! Some may say this itself is suspicious, but we can already deduce that he was there to make an impact. If he wasn’t, he’d have killed Parker on the quiet. So ensuring this went out live simply fits the MO of a narcissistic killer. He also had his own camera to capture his crime! That being said we don’t know for sure what was going through his mind, he could have just as easily been panicking, stepping forward and then stepping back as he internally jostled with what he was about to do. Assuming they’re all actors because of these actions is to brush aside the complexities of human behaviour. So why did Parker and Gardner not see him? Parker definitely did, but it was only momentarily as the ladies were focussed on the task at hand. It’s not like they would have been alert and looking out for a gunman that morning. Is The Shooter’s Hand White? This is one of those “you see what you want to see” situations. As a white guy with peachy coloured skin, it doesn’t seem like the hand in the shooter’s footage is Caucasian to me. It’s certainly light, perhaps from a tanned white guy or Mexican, but the pigmentation is also 1. African American. Looking at Flanagan’s hands and general complexion in other images tells us all we need to know about this silly claim. And let’s face it, if this was a set- up to frame a black guy, the hoaxers would probably use a black guy! Oh, like the black guy caught on the news camera for a split second: Is The Shooter Wearing Black or Blue? This is another one of those illogical and absolutist points that the truthers haven’t fully considered. It stems from comparing the blue sleeve we see from the shooter’s perspective to the brief clip of the shooter from the news camera’s perspective, which is after he’s started firing and is closer to the darker roofed area. In some versions of the clip and screencap the clothing looks very dark, close to black (although not jet black), in others he’s clearly wearing blue and there’s nothing suspicious about it at all. We can logically conclude that this is just the contrast between the two cameras and the change in lighting, and the various differences in quality and format as the clips have made their way online. It’s also worth noting that the blue shirt is unbuttoned with something darker underneath. To play devil’s advocate, why would they make all of these so called continuity errors if it was staged? There’s No Blood, How Did She Run? First of all this isn’t a video game or a horror film, so don’t expect blood to be squirting at the cameras. Unless there’s an exit wound or an artery has been hit, it’s actually quite rare to see any kind of visible spray. Parker has turned within 2 seconds, so if she was hit somewhere on her left side, it’s quite possible we wouldn’t see a thing. That being said we don’t really know where Parker was hit or even if she was hit by those initial 3 bullets. They could have grazed her, they could have hit her where it wouldn’t have immediately immobilized the body or caused massive exterior bleeding. Just like hunted animals people do run when they’ve been shot and their flight mode has kicked in. If they didn’t there would be no such thing as shooting survivors would there? Reports suggest Flanagan was using a Glock 1. While he mentioned buying hollow point bullets in reference to the Charleston shooting, there is no confirmation that this is the type of ammo he used in the real world. In reviewing numerous videos of real life shootings online, the vast majority show no visible blood spatter and many victims run after being hit. Here’s a sample: No blood spatter. No blood spatter. Runs some distance. No blood spatter. Shot point blank in the head, no horror film blood. Gets shot keeps running and collapses off camera. So is it possible that she could have been hit without any immediate sign of blood or injury, and had the ability to run off? It’s also worth mentioning that her black and red clothing are not the best of colours if the goal is to spot fresh wounds within 2 seconds, from less than perfect video footage. Likewise most real life shooting videos also don’t seem to pick up the presence of shell casings, so there’s nothing unique about that either. Cameras are often not at a frame rate high enough to capture them being ejected at high speeds. Also remember we’re seeing the shots from the shooter’s perspective. Shell casings often fly behind, to the feet, or to either side of the shooter. There’s no reason why we should see them pinging out in front, especially if they are ejected to the right (like most Glocks) because the gun is so close to the right hand side of the screen and the camera angle is to the left of the gun. This is why so called comparison videos made by truthers are disingenuous. They’ll show a perfectly captured and slowed down video of a gun being fired with a good angle on the ejection, and then compare it with the low quality vertical clip of this incident where half the time the shooter’s hand is almost out of view and we don’t even see the right hand side where the casings would be ejected. In the higher quality uploads of the news camera’s perspective (this was captured in broadcast quality with a high frame rate) we do actually see what looks like shell casings flying and dropping to the shooter’s right, and is that blood on the floor as well?: Shell Casing 1. Shell Casing 2. This next gif is quite hard to see because of quality issues, but if you focus on the bottom right hand corner, you can see what are quite probably specks of blood landing on the wood. Since the high quality video keeps getting taken down, go find it for yourself and you’ll see it’s definitely not pixelation, and if it’s not blood what is it? People have also made claims that because we can see the muzzle flash on the gun the video must be fake. Their evidence for this is other gun videos with no muzzle flash. The truth is many videos of glock handguns show muzzle flash. There are so many variables here that it’s silly to write the whole thing off as fake because the shooter’s video managed to capture some flash.
